The Delaware Valley Chapter of APPA fondly remembers our colleague Fred Long who recently passed away. Fred was an inspirational leader within our Chapter and we recall him as a fun-loving and personable individual. While serving at LaSalle University, he provided strong leadership and a wealth of knowledge to the Philadelphia 2003 ERAPPA Host Committee as co-chair with Glenn Smith. Together they originated the inspirational Conference tagline, “We the People…edu.” The 2003 Conference showcased Philadelphia’s rich American and educational history with the Monday evening networking event at the new National Constitution Center. His costumed participation in the opening of the Conference as a Town Crier, introducing Ben Franklin actor, Ralph Archibold, and welcoming Conference guests, and his work establishing the fun run to the Art Museum steps, were instrumental to the success of the Conference.
Fred further understood the importance of appealing to younger emerging facilities professionals. He recruited a young Kathy DiJoseph from Haverford College to chair the Entertainment Committee and Kathy noted, “I actually thought he was crazy – he was the one who insisted, and explained the importance of the involvement and participation of the younger professionals – and what this meant to DVAPPA’s success.”
Fred also appreciated the value of a strong professional chapter network to offer information sharing and support. After the 2003 Conference Fred continued his support to ERAPPA while serving as Vice President for Chapter Affairs for approximately 3 years. Fred’s commitment to Chapter membership initiatives was further illustrated, during his time as DVAPPA President, through his strong advocacy for the annual DVAPPA spring retreat at Skytop. Those of us who remember that annual event know how special that event was.
Fred passed away on March 25 and we remember, and will miss, him as a dear and trusted colleague and friend.
